Dissonance: Tidal Intervention is a 2-part conceptual site-responsive artwork, referencing human impact on environmental flows, consisting of a civic sign structure holding a brightly coloured abstract video image and a video work.
The pixelated and apparent incomplete design is taken from in-situ filming of the location with an old analogue video camera - the intervention of tidal flow is reflected in the intervening the flow of visual data during filming, creating pictorial distortion of wave transmission.
Dissonance considers the congruence between systems that appear as philosophical or material contradictions, disharmony or tension, where the balance of conflicting systems act simultaneously. The elongated rock formations, known as groynes, that now commonly protrude from our coastlines are dissonant. The Lorne groyne encapsulates this as an attempt to retain and preserve the natural coastline while being an unnatural projection of human intervention.
